Farvergade – Spiller dansemusik fra Søren Christensen & Niels Aage Andersens nodebog

Folkemusikerne Clara Tesch, Mads Kjøller Henningsen og Julian Svejgaard er alle involveret i nogle af de mest aktive bands og projekter på den danske folkemusikscene; f.eks. Floating Sofa Quartet, Stundom, Mads Hansens Kapel, Vesselil, Trolska Polska, Lars Lilholt Band etc.
Som trioen “Farvergade” har de på denne udgivelse kastet sig over en række melodier fra en gammel håndskrevet nodebog efter to sydsjællandske spillemænd; Søren Christensen & Niels Aage Andersen – musik som måske blev spillet på datidens natklubber inde i København!

Historien omkring nodebøgerne startede på Sydsjælland, tirsdag den 8. marts 1853 i Karise, hvor gårdmandssønnen Søren Christensen fyldte 18 år. I den forbindelse fik han en nodebog fyldt med tomme nodelinjer, og han begyndte straks at udfylde dem med dansemelodier. Nogle af melodierne komponerede han selv, men størstedelen fik han sandsynligvis andre steder fra. Søren havde lært at spille violin oppe i Hellested, og snart var han spillemand ved fester og andre sammenkomster rundt omkring på egnen. Han må have haft talent for musikken, for i en kort periode tjente den unge Søren til dagen og vejen ved at spille på én af de mange danseboder (datidens natklubber) som fandtes inde i København på den tid. – Måske var mange af melodierne i Sørens nodebog de sidste nye dansehits fra hovedstaden?

I 1860 giftede Søren sig med gårdmandsdatteren Sidse Marie Andersen fra landsbyen Jyderup ved Faxe, og dermed blev han selv gårdmand på gården Hyldekærgård (se bagsiden af coveret).
Under krigen i 1864 var Søren i krigstjeneste som hornblæser i reserven, men han mødte aldrig fjenden. Årene både før og efter krigen brugte han hovedsageligt på at renovere, udbygge og drive gården, som stadig findes i Jyderup den dag i dag.
Til gården konstruerede Søren selv en række ret raffinerede hestedrevne landbrugsmaskiner, og Søren blev derfor kendt på egnen som en fingernem “Ole Opfinder”. Søren Christensen blev i det hele taget en højt agtet personlighed i Jyderup og omegn, og da han døde i 1913 fulgte 25 hestevogne hans kiste op til Faxe kirke.

Musikken fulgte Søren livet igennem, og kun få år inden sin død, overdrog han både sin violin og sin nodebog til sin ældste dattersøn, Niels Aage Andersen (1896-1975) som siden også overtog Hyldekærgård. Den purunge Niels Aage gik til musikundervisning hos den lokale musikdirektør i Næstved og øvede sig i at (af)skrive noder.
Dermed blev en håndfuld nye melodier tilføjet til nodebogen i starten af 1900-tallet – bl.a. Den Gode Maler Schottisch. Niels Aage blev selv en travl spillemand på egnen, bl.a. som trompetist i det populære orkester Kongstedmusikken, men de sidste mange sider i bedstefaderens nodebog efterlod han tomme.

På denne udgivelse kan du høre 20 af ud af de ca.300 dansemelodier som Søren og Niels Aage i sin tid fik skrevet ind i nodebogen med pen og blæk.
Med et par enkelte undtagelser spilles melodierne som traditionel dansk dansemusik anno 2022…

This project is about presenting a number of tunes from some old tunebooks written and collected by Søren Christensen & Niels Aage Andersen
 – tunes which might have been the hits played on that times nightclubs  

Clara Tesch, Mads Kjøller Henningsen and Julie Svejgaard are together and individual involved in some of the most forefront bands and projects on the Dnish folk music scene (as Floating Sofa Quartet, Trolska Polska, Stundum, Lars Lilholt band, Vesselil)

The Story about the tunebooks started the 8th of March 1853, in the Danish small village of Karise where Søren Christensen had his 18th birthday. He was a farmer’s boy, but on this day, he got himself a tunebook full of empty staves. He immediately started writing down dance tunes – a few of which he composed himself, but the rest probably came from elsewhere.
Søren had learned to play the fiddle in the nearby village of Hellested, and soon he began playing at parties and other social gatherings in his area. For a while he was even working as a musician at a public dance parlour (basically a nightclub) in Copenhagen. – Maybe some of the tunes in his tunebook were the hottest new dance hits from the big city?

In 1860 Søren married the farmer’s daughter Sidse Marie Andersen from the village of Jyderup near the city of Faxe, and became a tenant farmer himself, maintaining the farm Hyldekærgård

During the war against Prussia in 1864, Søren was drafted as a trumpeter but he never saw any battle. He spent the years before and after the war renovating and expanding Hyldekærgård with his own two hands – the farm is still there today! He was held in such high regard by his peers that when he died in 1913, twenty-five horse-drawn carriages followed his coffin from Hyldekærdgård up to the church in Faxe.

Music seems to have followed Søren throughout his life, but a few years before his death he passed his fiddle and his tunebook on to his oldest grandson; Niels Aage Andersen, (1896-1975) who would eventually also inherit the farm. The young Niels Aage started practising writing (or rather; copying) sheet music onto the remaining empty pages of his grandfather’s tunebook, and in that way a handful of newer melodies were added to the collection in the early 20th century..

Niels Aage grew up to become an accomplished trumpet player at weddings, fairs, dances and other social gatherings throughout the county. But he left the final pages of his grandfather’s old tunebook empty.

On this album you will hear twenty out of the approximately three hundred dance tunes that Søren and Niels Aage collected.
With a few exceptions we perform all these tunes as traditional Danish dance music…as we like to play it!
