One of the leading figures on the Danish folk scene, the violinist and composer Kristine Heebøll release several of her newly composed tunes for traditional dances.

On this album, she has invited a few of Danish folk instrumentalists to the recordings lining up in 4 different bands.

“I have thought for a long time that a change or new wave of interest in folk dance and folk music will soon sweep over the country and the great energy that arises when the very best of social dance meets the very best of musical expression. I have the feeling that there are convincing pop ups here and there, and as the change spread I have composed new material to complement the tradition. It is my contribution to passing the time “while we wait for the wave”.

In 2016 I gave myself the challenge of composing music for the more specific Danish dances, tour dances and social dances. I applied for – and got – a work grant from AUTOR (then DJBFA) so that I could take a leave of absence from teaching. A kind man at Magtenbølle Enggård lent me a room where I could immerse myself in the company of the treasurers Kurt and Karsten, a wood-burning stove, my dog, my violin, my electric piano and a relay that teased. This is where the majority of the material you listen to on the album was composed.

I hope that with this release I can inspire fiddlers and fiddlers to pull additional melodic material out of their hat for the already existing dances. The supplementary melodies can be old numbers from music books, foreign numbers or, as in this release: newly written. In the old Danish descriptions of dances, there is often one particular melody for one particular dance. I really like the old music, and although it may be easier to remember steps from notes and notes from steps, I also think that it “locks” me as an artist and as a dance musician.

So while I wait for the wave, I shake the bag and hope that others will want to do the same. I see folk music as a living tradition that both pays tribute to the past, lives in the present and creates the future.

Even though folk music is based on the roots, and even though we stand on the shoulders of the old musicians, I think it is important for the essence of folk music that we put ourselves into the music; in the selection, in the interpretation and in the creation of it.

This album is presented by 4 different Bølgen bands. This reflects the whole spirit of the Bølgen project for the last 8 years, as I have been out playing with the material many times, but almost never twice with the same constellation.”
